Couple Takes the Lead in My Fair Lady

The Green Room Community Theatre will continue its run of Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady this weekend at the Old Post Office Playhouse.  Starring in the lead roles are Dustin and Lee Ousley as Professor Henry Higgins and flower seller Eliza Doolittle, respectively.  Although Dustin and Lee were in a few productions together at Furman University, this is the first time the two have been cast in lead roles opposite one another.  When they made the decision to audition, their hope was to just share the experience of being in the same show together.  As Henry and Eliza, they certainly got their wish.

Dustin is the Choral Director at Fred T Foard High School and Lee teaches second grade at Hiddenite Elementary.  They met at Furman 10 years ago and continued a long distance relationship for seven years as both pursued masters degrees and careers.  Dustin received a Masters in Choral Conducting from UNC-Greensboro and Lee has a Masters in Classical Voice Performance from Manhattan School of Music.  Married in June of 2009, the couple regularly sings in area churches and their hometowns in South Carolina.

Besides the fun of being in a show together, Dustin has enjoyed playing a part where he really has to “dig” to portray the character.  Higgins has a lot of dialogue and very wordy songs, but Dustin has enjoyed the challenge.  Lee played Eliza in high school and is happy to revisit the material again.  “I am able to bring a lot more life experience to the part this time.”  She also enjoys getting to verbally fight with Higgins on stage because it is so out of character for them as a couple.

My Fair Lady is produced by Catawba Valley Medical Center and is directed by John Coffey.  Remaining production dates are May 20, 21, 27, and 28 at 8pm and May 22 and 29 at 3pm.  Box Office hours are 10:00 am-5:30 pm Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays throughout the run of the show.  The Box Office telephone number is 828-464-6128.  Ticket prices are $14 for Adults, $12 for Seniors and Students, and $8 for Children.  For non-ticket information, please call The Green Room offices at 828-464-6583 or visit us on the web at www.the-green-room.org.

John Coffey and Mary Lou Barber to Perform at OPOP

The Green Room Community Theatre is pleased to present “An Evening with John Coffey and Mary Lou Barber” on Saturday, April 30 at 8:00 pm at the Old Post Office Playhouse.  Together, they will present a classic Broadway program.  A reception will be held immediately after the event and will be open to all those in attendance.

Mr. Coffey, a native of Lenoir, is well-known throughout the Unifour area having served as the first Artist-in Residence for the Catawba County Council for the Arts in 1982, as Musical Director for many area theatres including Hickory Community Theatre, and as the Artistic Coordinator of the Green Room Community Theatre and Facilities Coordinator for what is now called the Newton-Conover Auditorium.  A graduate of Juilliard, he returned to New York in 2000 and has since worked with many professional theatres and toured extensively with shows such as The Full Monty, 3 Mo’ Divas, 42nd Street (playing the part of Oscar, the Rehearsal Pianist) and many other, the most recent being Danny and Sylvia, the Danny Kaye musical.

Mary Lou Barber is originally from New Jersey but has traveled the world, from cruise ships to European tours to National tours.  Her natural love for dance took her through the ranks of four dance companies and eventually to the world of musical theatre.  Among the incredible characters she has had the opportunity to play are Cassie in A Chorus Line, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street, Sally Smith in Me and My Girl and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. She was also honored to cover the roles of Grizabella, Jellylorum, and Jennyanydots in the National Tour of Cats.
